Overall Rating

Anora is the Palme d Or winner that lived up to every bit of the hype. Sean Baker film about a New York sex worker who marries a Russian oligarch son is funny, devastating, and magnificent.

Anora arrives as the rare Cannes Palme d Or winner that plays for a genuine mass audience. Sean Baker has been making intimate, human films about people on the margins for two decades — Tangerine, The Florida Project, Red Rocket — and Anora is his masterwork.

Mikey Madison

Madison performance as Ani is a revelation. She is funny, fierce, vulnerable, and completely real. This is one of the great debut lead performances in recent cinema history. Yura Borisov as Igor is equally superb.

The Verdict

Anora is the best film of 2024. Funny, heartbreaking, and utterly alive in ways that most films are not. Rating: 10/10. Currently in theaters and streaming.
