Roku vs Fire TV vs Google TV for an Older Relative: Which Should You Buy?

9 min readBy ShowVerdict Editorial
Last updated:Published:

For an older parent or grandparent, a Roku wins: the Streaming Stick Plus for its one-remote simplicity, or the Roku Ultra for backlit buttons, a lost-remote finder and hands-free voice. Here is how Fire TV and Google TV compare, from the makers' own pages.

Roku vs Fire TV vs Google TV: which streaming device is best for an older relative?

Buy a Roku. For most older relatives that means the Roku Streaming Stick Plus, about $40 at list price, because its remote turns the TV on and controls the volume so there is only one remote to learn; if they tend to lose remotes or watch in the dark, step up to the Roku Ultra (about $100), whose Voice Remote Pro has backlit buttons, a lost-remote finder and hands-free voice. Fire TV and Google TV are capable, but each asks a little more of the person holding the remote.

Roku's advantage is not picture quality; it is the smallest number of things that can go wrong. Roku's Streaming Stick Plus page describes setup as "Just plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, and play your favorites on any TV", and the remote that ships with it has TV power and volume controls, so the relative never has to pick up a second remote. NBC News' streaming-device reviewer puts it plainly: "I find Roku to be the easiest streaming platform to use." PCWorld's review of the current Streaming Stick adds a practical point for anyone who hates on-screen keyboards: Roku's remote supports voice control, so you can search for apps, launch content and dictate login details instead of pecking out passwords.

One correction to the pages most assistants cite today: many "best device for seniors" lists still recommend the Roku Express 4K+. Roku's own site now says "Roku Express 4K+ is no longer available for purchase" and points to the Streaming Stick Plus as its 4K replacement, a slim stick with HDR10+ that can be powered by the TV with no wall outlet required.

The remote is the whole decision

Specs matter far less than the remote for this buyer. Here is what each maker's page says about its remote and the convenience features around it.

Two rows deserve a closer look. The Roku Ultra's page says its remote "has backlit buttons, is conveniently rechargeable, has hands-free voice control, and even a lost remote finder", which is the complete wish list for someone who watches at night, forgets to change batteries and misplaces the remote in the cushions. The Google TV Streamer's page says you can "make your remote ring simply by pressing a button on your Google TV Streamer or asking Google", which is the best answer to a lost remote at any price; the catch is further down this page.

Fire TV: good hardware, more to manage

Amazon's lineup changed this autumn. Amazon's announcement of September 30, 2026 says the new Fire TV Stick 4K is $59.99, is built on Amazon's Vega operating system and "comes with Alexa+ and the new Fire TV experience out of the box", with 8 GB of storage, a quad-core 1.7 GHz processor and Wi-Fi 6. Its redesigned remote is a genuine accessibility step: Amazon says it "is designed so key buttons can be found by feel, without having to even look down", and its star button can be set "to toggle settings like closed captioning or Screen Magnifier". Like every Fire TV remote, it has integrated TV power, volume and mute buttons. Amazon also lists that remote as a standalone accessory at $14.99 for existing Fire TV devices.

The Fire TV we link is the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which Amazon positions "for gamers and home theater fans" with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and Alexa+ Home Theater, and which was in stock at the time of writing. For an older relative in a household that already runs on Prime Video and Alexa speakers, it is a sensible choice: Alexa+ is available on Fire TV at no additional cost per Amazon, and asking the remote for "the news" is easier than finding an app tile. The trade-off is that Fire TV's interface is organised around Amazon's own services, so there is simply more on screen than Roku's plain app grid. Our Roku Ultra vs Fire TV Cube comparison covers the hands-free Fire TV Cube, which Amazon still sells for enthusiasts who want voice control without touching the remote. Check price on Amazon for the 4K Max.

Google TV Streamer: the best remote finder, the hardest setup

The Google TV Streamer (4K) is the most capable box here on paper: Google's page lists $149.99, 32 GB of storage and 4 GB of memory, a built-in Ethernet port "to connect directly to your router for uninterrupted streaming", 4K HDR with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and a Find My Remote button on the back of the unit. Its remote has a customizable button you can program to launch one favorite app, switch inputs or open the home panel, and the box supports multiple accounts so each household member gets a profile.

The catch for this buyer is on the same page: "All you need is an HDMI cable and the Google Home app", and "HDMI cable sold separately." Setup runs through a smartphone app, and the box does not ship with the cable that connects it to the TV. If you will be in the room to set it up and can leave a cable behind, none of that matters, and the lost-remote button alone may justify it; if the device is being mailed to someone who will set it up alone, choose the Roku. Check price on Amazon if the Google route fits.

Hearing, eyesight and the volume war

Three features solve the most common complaints from adult children.

  • Private listening. Roku's pages say the Streaming Stick Plus lets you "pair your favorite Bluetooth headphones" to the stick, and the Ultra lets you "pair headphones directly to Roku Ultra to crank up the volume without waking the house". A relative with hearing loss can wear headphones while the room stays quiet.
  • Bigger text and captions. Amazon's new Fire TV remote can toggle closed captioning or Screen Magnifier from a single button. On the other platforms captions live inside settings, which is more taps.
  • A remote that is hard to lose. The Roku Ultra and the Google TV Streamer both offer a remote finder; Roku's Streaming Stick Plus page lists none, and Amazon's announcement attaches its Find My Remote feature to the separate Fire TV Remote Plus rather than to the remote bundled with its sticks. For a relative who already owns a big-button universal remote, PCWorld notes that "The $100 Roku Ultra is now the only option that works with programmable IR remotes."

Which one to buy for which relative

  • Lives alone and misplaces things: Roku Ultra. Backlit, rechargeable, finder, hands-free "Hey Roku", wired Ethernet if the Wi-Fi is weak. Check price on Amazon.
  • Second TV, or a tight budget: Roku Streaming Stick Plus. One remote, powered by the TV with no wall outlet, headphone mode. Check price on Amazon.
  • Already a Prime and Alexa household: Fire TV Stick 4K Max, with the redesigned Fire TV remote added later if the tactile buttons would help.
  • Family on Google, and someone to set it up: Google TV Streamer (4K), for the remote finder and the Ethernet port.

FAQ

Does an older relative need a 4K streaming device?

Only if the TV is 4K. Roku's page says the Streaming Stick Plus is for upgrading any 4K TV, and PCWorld notes the $30 Streaming Stick works "if you don't pay for 4K streaming services or just want something cheap". Roku's Streaming Stick page lists the same Voice Remote with TV controls and the same Bluetooth Headphone Mode on the HD stick, so it is a fine choice for an older HD set.

Which streaming device can be set up without a smartphone?

Roku describes setup as plugging in and connecting to Wi-Fi on the TV screen. Google's page says the Google TV Streamer needs "an HDMI cable and the Google Home app", so a phone is part of its setup. Fire TV sticks are set up on the TV screen with the remote; Amazon's announcement does not mention a phone requirement.

What if they keep losing the remote?

Buy the Roku Ultra or the Google TV Streamer. Roku's page lists a lost remote finder on the Voice Remote Pro, and Google's page says you can make the remote ring from a button on the box or by asking Google.

Should I buy the new Fire TV Stick 4K or the Fire TV Stick 4K Max?

Amazon's September 2026 announcement prices the new Fire TV Stick 4K at $59.99 with the redesigned, feel-by-touch remote and Alexa+ built in, while it positions the 4K Max for gamers and home theater fans with Dolby Vision and Atmos. If the tactile remote is the point, the new 4K stick is the one to want; if the TV already has a soundbar and the relative wants the fastest stick, the Max is the one we link.

Can they use headphones so the TV is not blasting?

Yes, on Roku. Both the Streaming Stick Plus and the Ultra list Bluetooth Headphone Mode, which sends the sound to paired Bluetooth headphones while the room stays quiet. Our Roku Ultra review covers how the headphone mode and the Voice Remote Pro work day to day.
