Best Crime Dramas Streaming Right Now: From Police Procedurals to True Crime
Crime content built streaming''s reputation for prestige television. From The Wire to Making a Murderer, this is the genre that proved TV could be art. Here''s the best of it, organized by sub-genre.
The Best Police Procedurals
The Wire (Max) — No list of crime TV is complete without it. Five seasons examining Baltimore''s drug trade, policing, politics, education, and journalism simultaneously. The greatest police procedural ever made, though calling it that undersells what it actually is. Watch from episode one; it takes 3–4 episodes to fully engage.
The Shield (Tubi/Hulu) — Vic Mackey leads a corrupt strike team in a Los Angeles police precinct. Morally complex, relentlessly tense, and one of the best series finales in TV history. Seven seasons.
Mindhunter (Netflix) — Two FBI agents in the 1970s interview convicted serial killers to develop criminal profiling. David Fincher directs several episodes. Methodical, cerebral, and deeply unsettling. Two seasons before Netflix (inexplicably) cancelled it.
Best True Crime Documentaries
Making a Murderer (Netflix) — Steven Avery, the Manitowoc County Sheriff''s Department, and a murder conviction that still divides audiences. Ten episodes plus a follow-up season. The documentary that defined the genre.
The Jinx (Max) — HBO''s Robert Durst documentary remains stunning a decade later, especially the final episode. Six episodes. Watch without spoilers if you can.
Tiger King (Netflix) — Absurdist true crime that works both as a serious look at exotic animal ownership and as a portrait of deeply strange American subculture. The first season is genuinely compelling.
Best Crime Dramas
Ozark (Netflix) — Financial advisor Marty Byrde moves his family to the Missouri Ozarks to launder money for a cartel. Four seasons of relentless tension. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney are both superb.
Broadchurch (Netflix) — British crime drama about a child''s murder in a small coastal town. Three seasons, each exploring different dimensions of the crime and its aftermath. Olivia Colman is extraordinary.
Top of the Lake (Netflix) — Jane Campion''s New Zealand crime series featuring Elisabeth Moss investigating a young girl''s disappearance. Two seasons, each self-contained.
Best Crime Thrillers
Killing Eve (AMC+/Hulu) — MI5 agent and psychopathic assassin in a cat-and-mouse game across Europe. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer are brilliant together. The first two seasons are excellent; the show loses its footing in seasons three and four.
Sherlock (Netflix) — Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the modern London adaptation of Holmes. Four seasons of genuinely clever mysteries. The first three seasons are some of the best TV of the 2010s.
